America’s Rifle 101: Carbine Clinic
Sep 10, 2016 @ 1:00 pm—4:00 pm PDT
Estimated Ammunition Required: None. This is a non-firing course. Students are not required to bring a carbine or ammunition. Instructors will provide carbines and dummy rounds. For safety purposes as we will be handling rifles, no ammunition is allowed in the classroom.
It’s time to eliminate the misconception that AR stands for “assault rifle,” and tell the world what AR really stands for: America’s Rifle. While originally named for the manufacturer, “ArmaLite,” the AR-15 has become an iconic rifle in the United States. The popularity of ARs over the past few years continues to rise. Millions of gun owners have purchased ARs for recreational shooting as well as for home defense. This classroom course is an orientation to the AR-15 carbine intended for the new AR-15 owner, or for someone who is considering getting an AR-15 in the near future.
This course is conducted as an NRA America’s Rifle Challenge classroom clinic.
Students will learn:
- Rules for safe gun handling
- Brief history of the AR-15 family of rifles and carbines
- Carbine parts and operation
- Basic operation of AR-15 carbines, to include safe handling and unloading
- Purchasing an AR-15
- Common AR-15 accessories (slings, magazines, etc)
- Optics and Sights for the AR-15: USGI Irons, Back-Up Irons, Red Dots, ACOGs, and more!
- Field Stripping & Cleaning the AR-15
- Introduction to NRA America’s Rifle Challenge
- Opportunities for learning more and competition
Instructors will have a number of different AR-15 rifles and carbines in different configurations on hand with a variety of optics and accessories. Students will be able to look through optics, feel the difference between free floated rails and traditional handguards, try out different slings, feel the balance differences between different wegihts and lengths of barrels, and more! There’s no substitute for getting hands on experience with the help of an experienced instructor before making a big purchase.
This class will be taught by NRA certified instructors. Please click on the Event Organizer name below for more information.

America’s Modern Musket
Did you know that during the American Revolution, a debate about the proper caliber and rate of fire for small arms raged among the Continental Army and Continental Congress? Today we debate calibers and firearm designs on the internet, and it seems some things never change!
Revere’s Riders events always include a brief history discussion to remind us of our heritage. We’ll have some reproductions of muskets used in the American Revolutionary War on hand and show the linkage between these historical tools used in the fight for Independence and the modern AR-15 design. It turns out that the modern AR-15 is the recent evolution of over two centuries of American small arms experience.
