Rifle 125 (Basic Rifle) – One Day (Laramie, WY)

Feb 19, 2022 @ 8:00 am5:00 pm MST

Rifle 125 (Basic Rifle) Overview

Prerequisites: None

Estimated Ammunition Required: About 200 rounds/day.

Rifle Requirements: You will need a safe rifle chambered in your preferred caliber. 10 round magazine-fed semi-automatic rifles generally work best for our classes, but any other type of rifle (tube-fed semi-automatic, lever-action, bolt-action, etc.) can be used as well. Bring whatever rifle you have and we will work with you.

Required Equipment: Please review our suggestions for appropriate Rifle 125 equipment and plan to bring the following:

  • sling for your rifle (a US GI sling or Magpul RLS or M-1907 type slings are strongly preferred as our instruction will be specific to this sling; loaner slings are typically available at the event)
  • at least two magazines (6 better, and clear better again) for your rifle
  • a way to take notes
  • hearing protection
  • eye protection
  • plenty of your preferred method of hydration (both plain water and something to replace electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal); (hot fluids and no hydration bladders optimal for winter shoots)
  • clothing appropriate for the weather (loose fitting clothing, especially around the neck, is discouraged as hot brass can lodge against the skin and cause a burn) (plan on being outdoors all day; wind/snow/sun can be brutal in Laramie during the winter)
  • Pack a lunch; classes will continue during lunch

It is helpful that all ammunition be of the same type (i.e. same weight, type, lot, manufacturer, etc) for this event. Shooting will primarily be at 25 yards. At some facilities, it may be possible to move out to longer distances, but a rimfire rifle should be just fine for all activities.

Optional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event:

  • case for your rifle
  • shooting mat, carpet remnant or similar
  • hat with a brim (to deflect flying hot brass)
  • folding chair

Loaner Firearms: loaner firearms are NOT available.

Overview: This is our signature offering, based on traditional American riflecraft that teaches “Hits Count!” It is appropriate for a wide breadth of student skill levels. This course lays a sound foundation for students to shoot groups under time pressure from a variety of practical field positions. Rifle 125 includes classroom and range time learning to shoot rifles. Students learn:

  • Rules for safe gun handling & range rules
  • Rifle parts and operation & ammunition
  • Shooting fundamentals: Five steps to firing each shot
  • Natural Point of Aim
  • Shooting from the prone, standing and sitting/kneeling positions to include use of the sling
  • Introduction to Sight Adjustments and basic calculation of minutes of angle
  • 25 Yard “Morgan’s 13” Classifier
  • 25 Yard Rifle Qualifier

The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere

Hear the true story of Paul Revere’s famous ride and learn about the events that immediately precipitated the Revolutionary War. Paul Revere did not ride alone – many individuals played crucial roles in the events of April 19th, 1775.

This history presentation begins with alarm riders warning “the Regulars are out!” You’ll hear about the dramatic stand on Lexington Green and the “shots heard ’round the world” at Concord’s North Bridge. The tale concludes with harrowing life-or-death choices made along the 17 mile “battle road.”

This exciting tale will be woven throughout the day’s marksmanship events.

Additional Range Information

Revere’s Riders will be holding a shoot on Saturday Feb 19th at the first tactical bay past the covered 200yd shed but before the blue conex. The shoot will be held regardless of weather conditions as long as the range is accessible from Rogers Canyon Road.

The shoot will involve instruction in field firing (no benches or bipods; shooting will be in standing, seated, and prone positions with the sling only for support); the instruction will be based on skills taught by the US Military from the late 1800s until today by the Marine Corps. The skills taught are those used in NRA High Power or CMP Mid-Range competitions.

All levels of shooting skill are welcome, from beginners to expert. Everyone benefits from review of fundamentals and coaching. Those with mobility issues who can see, hear, and comprehend are also more than welcome; we’ll work with all best as possible, safety being the primary concern. Ages 6-116 are encouraged to participate.

An opportunity to qualify at 25yds will be offered towards the end of the day, with targets sized to simulate 100 to 400yds used. Bringing a .22lr semi-automatic rifle with detachable box magazines of minimum 10 round capacity (optics or irons welcome) is recommended for those wishing to shoot a qualifying score, but bring what you’ve got. The real focus of this shoot is education, and improving the skills of the shooter, and this can be accomplished with any rifle.

The “winner” is not the one with the highest score, but the one who takes home the most information and then practices those skills. Those coming with a beginner mindset and notebook take home the most.

Registration will be online (reveresriders.org) with a substantial early-bird discount. Registration is also possible on-site for exact payment in cash, no discounts. Fees will vary (youth discounts, etc.) There will also be a $10 range fee (exact amount in cash, please) payable on-site for all, INCLUDING RANGE MEMBERS.

Please BRING a NEW, UNWRAPPED TOY as a donation to Toys for Tots of Albany County.

Other than bathrooms (in the clubhouse), plan on being OUTDOORS FOR THE ENTIRE (8-5) DAY. Check-in will begin at 8:00AM and ENDS at 8:30AM; the safety brief is promptly at 8:30AM.
