The post Basic & Intermediate Land Navigation first appeared on Revere's Riders.]]>

Event Overview: Two separate classes! Take the class best suited to your needs or sign up for both to save a bit of money. FREE FOR KIDS WITH A PAYING ADULT!!!

Basic Land Navigation – Introduction to Orienteering:

On Saturday we’ll spend a few hours in the classroom covering the basics of land navigation and orienteering: how to read a map and use a compass to find your way, plus a whole bunch of background information on the history of cartography, navigating and alternative methods to avoid getting lost!

After lunch we’ll head out to a local park and use our newly learned skills to find several pre-positioned items. It’ll be a fun, family-friendly scavenger hunt to instill confidence and reinforce analog methods of getting around.

Intermediate Land Navigation – Advantageous Use of Terrain for the Marksman:

Sunday’s Intermediate class will focus on applying military fundamentals to the world around us. We’ll dive deeper into analyzing maps and references available to civilians through open sources. Morning classroom instruction followed by a strategic planning exercise.

After lunch, attendees will participate in a guided walkthrough of a hilly and wooded local park doing tactical terrain identification and analysis.

Required Equipment: Please plan to bring the following:

  • Clothing appropriate for the weather and comfortable shoes or boots
  • Pen/Pencil

Optional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event:

  • Compass (If you have a compass, bring it! But don’t feel like you have to buy one for class.)
  • Maps (Feel free to bring maps from your area to compare & discuss!)
  • Map Case, Folder/Binder, Gallon-size Plastic Zipper Bags (To keep maps dry.)
  • Protractor
  • Ruler or Tape Measure
  • Pencil, Grease Pencil, Colored Pencils, Markers (Fine tip preferred.)
  • Sunscreen and/or Bug spray
  • Change of clothing/footwear. Towel. Rain gear if needed.
  • Snacks/Drinks (A way to replace electrolytes… what plants crave!)

Each attendee will receive a map & compass. Please bring your own if you have one (or more!) and we’ll cover how to use it. Do not feel like you have to buy new equipment for this class but if you’ve been wanting to get something for a while, now’s the time!

Topics of Instruction:

  • Maps: history, types, how they work
  • Compasses: history, types, how they work
  • Rulers/Protractors/Strings & Straight Edges: how to use these tools to aid in navigation
  • Finding points on a map and locating them in the field
  • Navigating from point to point
  • Determining your location using a map & compass
  • Pace count
  • Navigating around hazards, in the dark and during inclement weather

Event Location:

Both events take place in historic downtown Lebanon, Ohio, a charming little town located midway between Cincinnati & Dayton, and not too far from Columbus. Lebanon is described as, “historic charm, reimagined.”

We’ll be meeting each morning at 9:ooam at The Lebanon Brewing Company, located at 20 West Silver St., Lebanon, Ohio 45036 for the classroom portion. Parks are located just a few blocks away and we’ll be walking to them each afternoon. Free parking is available in the bank parking lot behind the brewery (ignore the no parking signs, it’s the weekend!) and in public lots throughout Lebanon.

Lunch is available for purchase on site each day at The LBC’s Ladder 41 Kitchen or attendees may leave to enjoy lunch elsewhere. Class will reconvene at 1:00pm for the field exercises.

Lebanon is home to several boutiques, antique shops and ice cream purveyors right downtown as well as Ohio’s oldest continually operated inn, The Golden Lamb.

Accommodations and attractions abound in this area of southwestern Ohio. Please “make a weekend of it” with family and friends while attending this event! Lebanon is appx. 15min from King’s Island, one of the premier amusement parks in the nation. Right next door is Great Wolf Lodge, a giant indoor water park with hundreds of hotel rooms. There’s no excuse not to have fun this weekend!

2-day Basic Rifle event at ECCL near Milan, OH

The post Basic Rifle — Two Day — June 27-28, 2026 — ECCL — Milan, OH first appeared on Revere's Riders.]]>

Basic Rifle Overview (This will be a Patriots’ Day celebration event.)

Prerequisites: None

Estimated Ammunition Required: About 250 rounds/day.

Rifle Requirements: You will need a safe rifle chambered in your preferred caliber. Magazine-fed semi-automatic rifles generally work best for our classes, but any other type of rifle (tube-fed pump or semi-automatic, lever-action, bolt-action, etc.) can be used as well. Bring whatever rifle you have and we will work with you. Scopes, red dots or open sights, all are welcome.

Required Equipment: Please review our suggestions for appropriate Basic Rifle equipment and plan to bring the following:

  • sling for your rifle (a US GI sling is strongly preferred as our instruction will be specific to this sling; loaner slings are typically available at the event)
  • at least two magazines for your rifle
  • a way to take notes
  • hearing protection
  • eye protection
  • plenty of your preferred method of hydration (both plain water and something to replace electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal)
  • clothing appropriate for the weather (avoid loose fitting clothing, especially around the neck, as hot brass can lodge against the skin and cause a burn. We also suggest long sleeves for the same reason.)

It is helpful that all ammunition be of the same type (i.e. same weight, manufacturer, etc) for this event. Shooting will primarily be at 25 yards. At some facilities, it may be possible to move out to longer distances, but a rimfire rifle should be just fine for all activities.

Optional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event:

  • case for your rifle
  • shooting mat, carpet remnant or similar
  • hat with a brim (to deflect flying hot brass)
  • stapler (and extra staples) to attach your target to the backer board
  • folding chair
  • lunch
  • snacks
  • sunscreen and/or bug spray

Loaner Firearms: loaner firearms suitable for use at this event are generally available but limited. Please contact the Event Director prior to the event if you would like to request a loaner firearm. You can do that in the comments field when you register.

Overview: This is our signature offering, based on traditional American rifle craft that teaches “Hits Count!” It is appropriate for a wide breadth of student skill levels. This course lays a sound foundation for students to shoot groups under time pressure from a variety of practical field positions. Basic Rifle includes classroom and range time developing your skills with your rifle. Students learn:

  • Rules for safe gun handling & range rules
  • Rifle parts and operation & ammunition
  • Shooting fundamentals: Five steps to firing each shot
  • Natural Point of Aim
  • Shooting from the prone, standing and sitting/kneeling positions to include use of the sling
  • Introduction to Sight Adjustments and basic calculation of minutes of angle
  • 25 Yard “Morgan’s 13” Classifier
  • 25 Yard Rifle Qualifier
  • Two Day Only: Intermediate calculation of minutes of angle for precise sight adjustments at all ranges
  • Two Day Only: Introduction to field range estimation including basic ballistic come-ups and live firing to longer distances (if the range facility permits)
  • Two Day Only: As time allows, there may be additional opportunities to engage in challenging/fun competitions.

The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere

As this is our 250th year as a nation, you will hear the true story of Paul Revere’s famous ride and learn about the events that immediately precipitated the Revolutionary War. Paul Revere did not ride alone – many individuals played crucial roles in the events of April 19th, 1775.

This history presentation begins with alarm riders warning “the Regulars are out!” You’ll hear about the dramatic stand on Lexington Green and the “shots heard ’round the world” at Concord’s North Bridge. The tale concludes with harrowing life-or-death choices made along the 17 mile British retreat on “battle road.”

This exciting tale will be woven throughout both day’s marksmanship activities.

Additional Event Information

Plan to arrive at 8:00 am on Saturday for registration. Sunday begins at 8:30 am.

Additional Range Information

The range charges a $10.00 range fee for the event. Please have cash with you, we will be collecting this at registration on Saturday.

Intermediate Rifle Overview

Prerequisites: Basic Rifle or similar class.

Rifle Requirements: This course is conducted as a Rimfire Known Distance clinic. Any safe, SCOPED semi-automatic, bolt or lever gun chambered in .22LR can be used. (Ruger 10/22, Marlin 795, Henry Golden Boy, Savage Rascal, etc.). Scopes should be 3-9×40 or larger. Fixed power scopes are fine.

Estimated Ammunition Required: 200 rounds, ideally the same type. THIS IS A RIMFIRE ONLY EVENT!

Required Equipment:

  • hearing protection
  • eye protection
  • magazines or speed loaders if needed
  • bipod, bag, pack or field-expedient rest
  • lunch (we’ll be staying on the range during lunch break)
  • water and something to replace electrolytes (what plants crave)
  • snacks
  • a way to take notes

Optional Equipment:

  • shooting mat
  • rifle/optic manual(s)
  • hat with a brim
  • knee/elbow pads
  • folding chair
  • small tool kit / cleaning kit
  • stapler

Clinic Overview: Attendees will develop a working knowledge of the skills needed to zero a rifle, trajectory, internal/external ballistics, “doping the sights” and how to make hits at known distances. Shots will be made at reduced distances of 25-100 yards, effectively simulating the difficulty of shooting a centerfire rifle at 100-500 yards.

All firing in this course will be done from the prone position off a rest and within 100 yards. We will focus on attaining proper come-ups for your rifle/ammo combination. You will save time & money by learning the concepts at this course and then applying them when shooting bigger rifles at longer distances while hunting, PRS-style shooting, defensive carbine, etc.

This class is not physically demanding but we will be walking 200yds and getting into and out of the prone position several times throughout the day.

Attendees should arrive for registration at 8:45 am. Class starts promptly at 9:00!
NOTE: This range is in the Central Time Zone!

Topics of instruction will include the following:

  • Field Shooting to Known Distances: Target Detection/Target Identification
  • External Ballistics: Effects of Wind, Temperature and Humidity
  • Basic Ballistics Calculations: Using Minutes of Angle (MOA) or Milliradians (MRAD/mils)
  • Range Estimation: Field-Expedient methods of determining Range
  • Data Collection: How to set up a “Dope Book”

Shots that Changed History!

From the involvement of Daniel Morgan’s men at the siege of Boston in 1775 to the pivotal shots made by Timothy Murphy at the battle of Yorktown in 1781, Colonial Marksmen made shots that shifted the course of the American Revolutionary War and, ultimately, changed the course of world history!

Hear the tale of these shots – made using the same skills learned in this clinic – woven throughout the day’s course of instruction.

Event Overview

This event is moderately physically demanding. We will be on our feet much of the day, moving between various positions on the range. We will be shooting from different positions throughout the day. The event will be setup as a two hot range event with groups rotating between stations.

Prerequisites: Basic Defensive Rifle is recommended.

Estimated Ammunition Required: About 300 rounds rifle ammunition, 200 rounds of pistol ammunition and 50rounds birdshot, 10 rounds 00 Buck, 10 slugs.

General Required Equipment: You should plan to bring the following to the event:

  • hearing protection
  • eye protection
  • plenty of your preferred method of hydration (both plain water and something to replace electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal)
  • clothing appropriate for the weather (loose fitting clothing, especially around the neck, is discouraged as hot brass can lodge against the skin and cause a burn)

General Optional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event:

  • magazine dump pouch
  • case for your rifle
  • case for your pistol
  • hat with a brim (to deflect flying hot brass)
  • folding chair
  • lunch
  • snacks
  • sunscreen and/or bug spray

Rifle Requirements: the AR-15 is an ideal rifle to bring. However, any safe semi-automatic rifle/carbine can be used (Mini-14, AK-47, Tavor, etc.).

Required Rifle Equipment: Please review our suggestions for appropriate Basic Rifle equipment and plan to bring the following:

  • at least four (4) magazines for your rifle/carbine
  • two (2) mag pouches to hold your spare rifle magazines (chest rig or gun belt)
  • sling for your rifle (a 2-point adjustable sling is recommended although a 1-point sling will work fine if that is your preference; the US GI sling is probably not ideal for this event)

If you have any questions concerning the suitability of your rifle/carbine for this course, please contact the Event Director.

Pistol Requirements: Pistols should be of a modern, drop safe design. The following are a good set of guidelines for an appropriate pistol for this event:

  • a medium-frame or large-frame pistol (e.g., Glock 19/Glock 17 or similar)
  • make sure your pistol is in good working order; if in doubt, have it checked by a qualified gunsmith or armorer. A pistol that malfunctions constantly will get you plenty of practice addressing malfunctions but not much practice with the drills
leave the brand new pistol you bought the day before the event at home

Older single action pistols manufactured before the 1980s and lacking a transfer bar safety are the most common type of pistol that lack drop safe design features, as do some military surplus imports from Eastern bloc countries and Taurus PT-series pistols not fixed during an international safety recall in 2015. These pistols may discharge if dropped and pose a potential safety hazard to our volunteers and students, and are not permitted. If you have concerns about the safety features of your pistol you should have it inspected by an armorer or gunsmith before class.

If you have any questions concerning the suitability of your pistol for this course, please contact the Event Director.

Required Pistol Equipment: Please review our suggestions on appropriate Defensive Pistol equipment and plan to bring the following:

  • magazines or speed loaders: bring at least THREE (more is better, especially if you are using a pistol with a capacity of less than 10 rounds)
  • holster: a strong side holster that does not collapse when your pistol is drawn (no appendix, ankle, shoulder or small-of-back holsters). Either IWB (“inside the waistband”) or OWB (“outside the waistband”) are fine, but the holster you intend to use for concealed carry would be preferred. An OWB holster is often easier to use if you have never drawn from a holster before but will still allow you to participate fully in the drills we will conduct. The crucial aspect is that your holster MUST hold your firearm securely without letting it move around on your hip; this will necessitate a holster that attaches at TWO POINTS to your gun belt; your holster should have sufficient retention to keep your firearm secure if you are rolling around on the ground.
  • gun belt: you will have your pistol on your hip for the entire day. It will seem heavier as the day goes on and a good, sturdy gun belt will minimize that feeling. A standard belt isn’t going to cut it here; spend a couple of dollars on a quality gun belt if you don’t already have one.
  • two (2) mag pouches to hold your spare pistol magazines

Shotgun Requirements: semi-automatic or pump-action. If you have any questions concerning the suitability of your shotgun for this course, please contact the Event Director.

Loaner Firearms: loaner firearms suitable for use at this event are generally available but limited. Please contact the Event Director prior to the event if you would like to request a loaner firearm.

Skills Contests: several skills contests will be run at this event:

  • Sand Dummy Drag
    • drag a 150 lb sand dummy approximately 200 yards during which you will be required to stop and perform buddy aid
    • complete sand dummy drag, drop rucksack
    • engage paper targets with a pistol from various positions/angles
    • engage 10 steel targets with a rifle and 10 rounds (1 point per hit)
    • scoring via hits and overall elapsed time
  • Pistol Pick Up
    • from a table of 5 different pistols, pick up each and fire two rounds on paper targets (one sighter plus one additional shot)
    • scoring via closest to the bullseye on all five targets
  • Battlefield Pick Up
    • pick up a random rifle from a table
    • engage steel targets with two rounds
    • scoring via combined hit and overall elapsed time
  • Additional “surprise” skills contests

Entries into the Skills Contests will be available for purchase at the event; see the 2026 Marty Brown Memorial Open™ Defensive Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun Swag Bags, Give Aways, Prizes, Auctions page for prize list.

Additional Event Information

Spectators are welcome but will be asked to remain a safe distance from the firing line (ear protection is required for all spectators; eye protection is optional).

Two day Intermediate Pistol event at Salem Hunting Cllub

The post Intermediate Pistol – Two Day – Salem September 19 & 20, 2026 first appeared on Revere's Riders.]]>

Intermediate Pistol Overview

Prerequisites: This course has no formal prerequisites, but we recommend that you attend our Basic Pistol offering prior to joining us for this event. Intermediate Pistol is a fast-paced program covering a lot of instructional points. The course is designed to improve marksmanship fundamentals for our attendees. We suggest that you should have taken some type of entry-level class already and you should already be familiar with the safe handling and operation of your pistol. If you are totally new to firearms/pistols, you may be better served to attend our Basic Pistol course which has a slower pace.

Attendees between ages 14-18 years must be accompanied by a parent for the entire event. If under age of 14, contact the Event Director to review their skills and get approval for their participation.

Estimated Ammunition Required: You will need a safe, functioning 22lr semi-automatic pistol for your work on Saturday and Sunday morning. We use .22lr pistols during the instructions and related drills as the lower power/recoil allows students to adopt their fundamentals faster. You will need about 300 rnds/day for that pistol. If you wish to also bring your centerfire/carry pistol on Sunday, there will be the opportunity to work with it on Sunday afternoon and apply what you learned on Saturday to that pistol as well.

Pistol Requirements: You will need a safe semi-automatic pistol with a minimum of two (2) functioning magazines of 10 rounds or greater capacity (extra magazines recommended), to fully participate in this course. Pistols should be of a modern, drop safe design.

Required Equipment: Please review our suggestions for appropriate Pistol equipment and plan to bring the following:

  • at least two magazines for your pistol
  • a way to take notes
  • hearing protection
  • eye protection
  • plenty of your preferred method of hydration (both plain water and something to replace electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal)
  • appropriate clothing. This is an Outdoor event so choose appropriate clothing (loose fitting clothing, especially around the neck, and short or no sleeves are discouraged as hot brass will be flying from your neighbor and it can lodge against the skin and cause a burn). Also, keep an eye on the weather reports, we shoot rain or shine so you may need your rain gear.

We will not be drawing from the holster in this class and we will run a “cold range.” You will not need a holster to participate in event activities.

Optional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event:

  • case for your pistol
  • stapler (and extra staples) to attach your target to the backer board
  • hat with a brim (to deflect flying hot brass)
  • folding chair
  • lunch
  • snacks
  • sunscreen and/or bug spray

Loaner Firearms: loaner firearms suitable for use at this event are generally available but limited. Please contact the Event Director prior to the event if you would like to request a loaner firearm.

Overview: This course, based on traditional American service pistol fundamentals is based on a “Hits Count” system. This course covers a sound foundation for students to shoot groups under time pressure from a practical stance. Intermediate Pistol includes classroom and range time with the goal to improve your pistol marksmanship skills. Students learn:

  • Rules for safe gun handling & range rules
  • Pistol parts and operation & ammunition
  • Shooting fundamentals: Five steps to firing each shot
  • Two Handed Grip & Stance: Isoceles and Weaver, benchrest, and shooting from low ready positions.
  • Natural Point of Aim
  • Shot Group Analysis
  • Clearing Common Stoppages
  • Whittemore’s Stand Pistol Qualifier

The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere

During the event breaks, we will share the true story of Paul Revere’s famous ride and learn about the events that immediately precipitated the Revolutionary War.

The tale concludes with harrowing life-or-death choices made along the 17 mile British retreat on “battle road” back to Boston.

This exciting tale will be woven throughout the day’s marksmanship events.

Additional Event Information

Time allowing, there may be some informal “team challenges” on Sunday to spice up the day. You are responsible for bringing a lunch both days.

Additional Range Information

The club charges non-club members a $10 range fee for the event. Please bring cash for this charge, it will be collected at registration.

2-day Rimfire KD event

The post Intermediate Rifle-Rimfire KD– Two Day ECCL (Milan, OH) first appeared on Revere's Riders.]]>

This is a RIMFIRE-ONLY event; we will only allow rifles chambered in rimfire cartridges. Ballistics info provided will be focused solely on .22lr ammo. Please leave your centerfire rifle at home.

Intermediate Rifle-Rimfire KD Overview

This clinic is designed to challenge attendees to accurately shoot their 22lr rifles to known distances out to 200yds. You will learn the trajectory, come-ups, external ballistics and field shooting challenges with the combination of your rifle and your .22lr ammo. This will be best achieved with a scoped rifle although open sights are certainly acceptable.

Prerequisites: Suggested — RR Basic Rifle course or previous experience with similar programs such as CMP’s Rimfire Sporter or other .22lr distance shooting programs.

If you are unfamiliar with the standing/seated/prone positions and the proper use of the GI loop sling, you will be frustrated at this event. Position instructions and proper sling usage will be only briefly reviewed.

Estimated Ammunition Required: Bring 200 rounds/day. It is important that all ammunition be of the same type (i.e. same bullet weight, velocity, and manufacturer) for this event.

Rifle Requirements: You will need a safe rifle chambered in .22lr (centerfire rifles will not be allowed). You can bring your semi-auto, bolt or lever 22lr rifle for this event.

Please make an effort to get a known zero prior to attending (25 yds is a good starting point). We will be sighting at each distance (50 yds ,100 yds, 150 yds, and 200 yds) on Saturday so you can learn your elevation adjustments. Wind corrections will also be covered at the event.

Required Equipment: Please plan to bring the following:

  • case for your rifle
  • sling for your rifle (the US GI sling will work perfectly for this event, but if you bring another style, it should be an easily adjustable sling)
  • at least two magazines of ten (10) or more round capacity for your rifle (extras magazines are a good idea)
  • a way to take notes
  • hearing protection
  • eye protection
  • plenty of your preferred method of hydration (both plain water and something to replace electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal)

Optional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event:

Overview: An Intermediate Rifle event picks up where the Basic Rifle clinic leaves off. Students, having mastered the fundamentals of marksmanship at 25 yards, learn to apply their skills at greater distances. Most importantly, students will learn about their rifle, their ammo — and their skill level at real distances beyond 25 yards.

This “Rimfire-Only” Intermediate Rifle event is focused on practical shooting under field conditions against targets out to 200 yds with a .22lr rifle. We will review the basics of IMC, the ballistics of the .22lr cartridge at various distances, and other considerations for shooting your .22lr rifle past 25 yards.

This event is scheduled for November so the weather can be cold and potentially wet. Please plan on dressing accordingly. The firing line is covered but you need to prepare for bad weather as we post/pull targets down range.

The Spirit of 1776

Picking up where “The Midnight Ride” concludes, the Spirit of 1776 traces the first full year of the American war for independence. From the high point of the Evacuation of Boston to the lows of early winter of 1776, follow the Continental Army as they are forced to flee across New York and New Jersey. Learn about the nearly insurmountable challenges they faced and the hope, faith and daring that pulled victory out of certain defeat.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to face down a huge amphibious armada invading New York City, shiver around a campfire reading about “summer soldiers and sunshine patriots,” or gamble it all on a desperate crossing of the Delaware River for “Liberty or Death” then you need to hear the Spirit of 1776.

This exciting tale will be woven throughout the day’s marksmanship events.

Additional Event Information

There is a $10/person range fee for non-members that is payable on the day of the event. Please bring cash.

Additional Range Information

Please plan to bring a lunch for both days. Parking is available at the range.
