Volunteer Only: Carbine – One Day (Seelyville, IN)
Oct 12 @ 8:00 am—5:00 pm EDT
Event Navigation
This event will be a VOLUNTEER ONLY opportunity to practice drills used in our Carbine and Advanced Carbine courses
Carbine Overview
Prerequisites: Suggested—Basic Rifle or similar class.
If you have not attended Basic Rifle, then you should be able to reliably hit a 10″ paper plate from the standing position out to 25 yards, kneeling at 50 yards, and prone at 100 yards. You should be able to consistently hit a 3×5 index card at 15 yards while standing. You should be familiar with basic operation of your carbine. If you cannot meet the accuracy suggestion then you may be frustrated at carbine class and be better served learning the fundamentals of marksmanship at a Rifle 125 clinic.
Estimated Ammunition Required: 100-200 rounds for your carbine and 100-200 rounds for your pistol (actual round count will depend on how many drills you participate in)
Rifle Requirements: Any safe semi-automatic carbine or “pistol caliber carbine” (“PCC”) can be used (AR-15, Mini-14, AK-47, Tavor, etc.). Anyone wishing to run a M1 Garand or M1 Carbine would be welcomed as well (paging Scott Brown…).
Pistol Requirements: Any safe semi-automatic pistol or revolver can be used. If you bring a semi-automatic pistol, it should be one having a “drop-safe” design.
Older single action pistols manufactured before the 1980s and lacking a transfer bar safety are the most common type of pistol that lack drop safe design features, as do some military surplus imports from Eastern bloc countries and Taurus PT-series pistols not fixed during an international safety recall in 2015. These pistols may discharge if dropped and pose a potential safety hazard to our volunteers and students, and are not permitted. If you have concerns about the safety features of your pistol you should have it inspected by an armorer or gunsmith before class.
Required Rifle Equipment: Please review our suggestions on appropriate Carbine equipment and plan to bring the following:
-
- at least four (4) magazines for your carbine (more is better)
- sling for your carbine (a 2-point adjustable sling is recommended although a 1-point sling will work fine if that is your preference; the US GI sling is probably not ideal for this event)
Required Pistol Equipment: Please review our suggestions on appropriate Defensive Pistol equipment and plan to bring the following:
-
- at least three (3) magazines or speed loaders for your pistol/revolver (more is better)
- holster: a strong side holster that does not collapse when your pistol is drawn (no appendix, ankle, shoulder or small-of-back holsters). Either IWB (“inside the waistband”) or OWB (“outside the waistband”) are fine, but the holster you intend to use for concealed carry would be preferred. An OWB holster is often easier to use if you have never drawn from a holster before but will still allow you to participate fully in the drills we will conduct. The crucial aspect is that your holster MUST hold your firearm securely without letting it move around on your hip; this will necessitate a holster that attaches at TWO POINTS to your gun belt; there are a few holsters that attach to your gun belt at one point and still hold your firearm securely, but they generally attach over an extended length of your belt effectively simulating two points of attachment.
- gun belt: you will have your pistol on your hip for the entire day. It will seem heavier as the day goes on and a good, sturdy gun belt will minimize that feeling. A standard belt isn’t going to cut it here; spend a couple of dollars on a quality gun belt if you don’t already have one.
- magazine carrier (you can get by with putting spare magazines in a pocket, but a magazine carrier is much preferred)
Required General Equipment: You should also plan to bring the following additional equipment:
-
- a way to take notes
- hearing protection
- eye protection
- plenty of your preferred method of hydration (both plain water and something to replace electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal)
Optional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event:
-
- case for your carbine
- case for your pistol
- hat with a brim (to deflect flying hot brass)
- knee/elbow pads (we may shoot from kneeling and other positions)
- folding chair
- lunch
- snacks
- sunscreen and/or bug spray
Overview: This event will be an opportunity for Revere’s Riders volunteers and instructors to practice the drills run in the Carbine and Advanced Carbine courses. The goal will be to increase everyone’s familiarity with these drills and to expand the group of volunteers/instructors able to assist or instruct at Carbine events.
Participants should feel free to participate in drills with which they are comfortable. Some drills will include a transition from the carbine to pistol; those uncomfortable with that skill level are welcome to refrain from participating.
At the end of the day, we will discuss a general outline of a Carbine Annex to the Revere’s Riders SOP. With “tactical” style events becoming more and more popular, Revere’s Riders as an organization has an urgent need to set out reasonable guidelines in our SOP for how our Carbine events will be conducted. All are welcome to participate.
