Basic Low Light Defensive Rifle Overview
Prerequisites: Suggested—Revere’s Riders Basic Defensive Rifle or similar. This is not an introductory course and participants are expected to be capable of the following:
- handling their firearm in a safe manner
- hit a 10″ paper plate from the standing position out to 25 yards, kneeling out to 50 yards, and prone out to 100 yards
- hit a 3″×5″ index card from the standing position at 15 yards
Due to the intrinsic risks associated with training in low-light conditions, the Event Director will approve each attendee for this course.
Estimated Ammunition Required: About 250 rounds.
Rifle Requirements: The AR-15 is an ideal rifle for this event; however, any safe semi-automatic carbine can be used (Mini-14, AK-47, Tavor, etc.).
Required Equipment: Please review our suggestions on appropriate Defensive Pistol equipment and plan to bring the following:
- rifle mounted tactical light
- at least four (4) magazines for your carbine (more is better)
- sling for your rifle (a 2-point adjustable sling is recommended although a 1-point sling will work fine if that is your preference; the US GI sling is probably not ideal for this event)
- a way to take notes
- hearing protection
- eye protection
- plenty of your preferred method of hydration (both plain water and something to replace electrolytes you will lose via sweating is ideal)
Optional Equipment: The following equipment is not required but may come in handy at the event:
- back-up light
- low-intensity “task light” for navigation and checking targets
- spare batteries
- spare bulbs (if your light uses incandescent bulbs)
- hat with a brim (to deflect flying hot brass)
- folding chair
- snacks
- sunscreen and/or bug spray
Overview: Basic Low Light Defensive Rifle is approximately five hours that offers an introduction to defensive carbine techniques applied to low light or total darkness situations. The class will focus on the use of modern, high intensity weapon mounted lights and their applications to defensive use in conjunction with carbines. Topics will include acquisition of information, use of handheld flashlights both with and without firearms, use of weapon-mounted lights, use of supplemental sighting devices (e.g. lasers), use of tritium night sights, etc.
