2024 SHOT Show

by Bruce Williams / Saturday, 03 February 2024 / Published in Civic Engagement, Marty Brown Memorial, RR in the News

Bradley “Slim” Settle, Revere’s Riders President, and myself were fortunate to have good friends that offered us the opportunity to attend the 2024 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, NV. Frank and Barb Melloni generously added Brad and I to their SHOT Show “crew” and allowed us to share their AirBnB for the duration of the show.

While Brad and I did do some touristy stuff in town (Slim may have won $100 on a $0.50 bet at 200 to 1 odds playing a certain antique horse racing game featured on Pawn Stars) along with a few “shennanigans”, we also left plenty of shoe leather on the show floor. In other words, this was mainly work and not play.

Our goal for the show was to personally visit each of 58 companies attending who made a donation of one kind or another to the Marty Brown Memorial™ series of events. That might sound easy enough to pull off in a day or so and then have the rest of the show to do whatever we wanted. However, Slim and I would battle 55,000 other show attendees for a chance to find the contact person for a particular company; not an easy task. Often the contact person in question would be away from the booth or otherwise engaged. Some of the “big name” booths, like Glock, would be continuously swamped with show attendees necessitating one of us getting to the show when the doors opened or waiting until the last day when the crowds would be less to finally have a chance to meet face-to-face.

We each easily walked more than 20,000 steps each of the four days of the show going back and forth from booth to booth.

We succeeded in personally thanking each company, shaking a hand, and letting each company know that they were a part of our success in raising over $72,000 for ovarian cancer support in central Indiana. This was about building a “relationship” with each company.

We also succeeded in getting commitments from several new companies as well as letting other company representatives know who we are and what we do. Announcements of those donations will be made closer in time to the Marty Brown Memorial™ Open Indiana Rifle scheduled for May 4, 2024.

Nearly every company representative made a point of telling us that they appreciated the personal thank you. A few even admitted that we were the exception to the rule; most recipients of a donation never bother to thank the donating company in any way, much less make the effort to do so personally. In addition to this personal thank you, Marty Brown Memorial™ Event Director Phil Brown sends out a letter and t-shirt to each donating company. So Revere’s Riders goes the extra mile for sure…

For all the 115 companies that have donated to the Marty Brown Memorial™ over the last 5 years and especially to those we have not gotten the opportunity to do so personally,

Thank You!
