Join Us at MBMI: Stage 2—200 Yard Seated

The 9th Annual Marty Brown Memorial Invitational™ is set for the weekend of Nov. 1-2, 2025 at Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh, IN. This is an informal 3-position rifle match shot at distances of 100 to 400 yards on targets measuring approximately 18×24 inches.

For those who haven’t yet joined us at the Marty Brown Memorial Invitational™, this post is the third of a 4-part series showing each of the 4 stages of the Revere’s Riders Rifle Qualification Test (R3QT) that comprise the course of fire (the first part of the series is Join Us at MBMI: Stage 4—400 Yard Prone). This week we are highlighting Stage 2. This stage is a “rapid fire” stage shot seated or kneeling at 200 yards.

Stage 2—200 Yard Seated

Initially, shooters are put into their “preparation period” where they can establish their position, adjust sights, adjust their sling, dry-fire, etc. (anything except load their rifle). On the “FIRE!” command, shooters transition from standing to seated and have 60 seconds to fire 10 rounds at the target. For this stage, shooters prepare two magazines, one with 2 rounds and one with 8 rounds. This forces a magazine change during the stage increasing the difficulty. Inexperienced shooters often fail to get all 10 rounds off before time expires.

Those that have attended our Basic Rifle course will have practiced this stage but at a reduced distance of 25 yards. To simulate 200 yards, our 25-yard qualification targets have reduced target sizes so the precision required of the rifleman to hit the target is the same as being at 200 yards actual distance. The seated less stable than the standing position that was featured in last week’s installment and, for many marksman, is the most difficult position to maintain over any significant period of time.

Note that Matt only loads his rifle once he is in the seated position. This avoids any potential negligent discharges during the transition from standing to seated. For shooters with physical limitations, they can skip the transition from standing but must wait to fire their first shot after those that have transitioned from standing have fired first. Matt makes this stage look easier than what it actually is…
