AAR: Marty Brown Memorial Open Defensive Rifle/Shotgun/Pistol
Eight attendees helped Revere’s Riders inaugurate our newest event in the Marty Brown Memorial™ series: the Marty Brown Memorial™ Open Defensive Rifle/Shotgun/Pistol. The event was held on Saturday July 25th at the Lost Creek Conservation Club near Terre Haute, IN. The event was run by Event Director Brad Hammack with assistance from John Viray, Jamey Vernon, Jim Rose, and Revere’s Riders President, Bradley Settle.
The MBMO Defensive event is geared towards the defensive/tactical shooting sports that are becoming very popular these days. Event Director Brad Hammack, John Viray, and Bradley Settle are all military veterans and very experienced in the combat/tactical techniques. In a departure from our other MBMO events, the MBMO Defensive is structured as more of a match/competition than an instructional course (think of the MBMO Defensive as the tactical/defensive equivalent of our Marty Brown Memorial™ Invitational). No formal instruction is provided; attendees are run through various tactical/defensive oriented shooting drills with several of these being scored/timed for the purposes of awarding prizes donated by our sponsors.
Ovarian Cancer Fundraising
All of the Marty Brown Memorial™events are dedicated to the memory of Marty Brown, an instructor with Revere’s Riders, who passed from a 40-month battle with ovarian cancer in 2017. Each of our events donates 50% of the ticket revenue (less expenses) and 75% of all other revenue to assist women and their families who are undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer. Revere’s Riders currently donates pre-paid gas cards to Ascension Health in Indianapolis as well as direct monetary donations to Ovar’coming Together in Indiana and the Ovarian Cancer Connection in Ohio.
For this event, it is estimated that over $2,500 was raised to support women fighting ovarian cancer. This brings us very close to a total of $100,000 raised by the Marty Brown Memorial™events since our start in 2019. Official fundraising totals will be announced at a later time.

Run & Gun
The first “skills contest” of the inaugural Marty Brown Memorial™ Open Defensive Rifle/Shotgun/Pistol was a simple “Run & Gun” style drill. Competitors run through the following:
- 100 meter run with full gear, carbine slung and unloaded, three 10-round rifle magazines, pistol loaded and holstered, three 10-round pistol magazines
- after completion of the 100 meter run, competitor applies self-aid with a tourniquet
- after successfully applying tourniquet, competitor moves to the pistol range
- engage paper target at 15 yards using VTAC board as cover with 5 rounds with two-handed grip and then with 5 rounds weak hand only grip; any position
- competitor then reloads
- with 5 rounds engages a second paper target at 7 yards while moving to their right; stop and reverse direction and engage the same target with another 5 rounds while moving to their left
- reload
- move to a 2nd VTAC board and engage a 25 yard target from the prone position; 5 rounds from the right side of the VTAC board and 5 rounds from the left side of the VTAC board
- drop pistol magazine, release slide, and reholster pistol
- move to the 100 yard rifle range
- engage a paper target at 100 yards from the prone position with 10 rounds
- reload
- engage a paper target at 75 yards from the seated/kneeling position with 10 rounds
- reload
- engage a paper target at 50 yards from the standing position with 10 rounds
- drop rifle magazine, close bolt, engage safety
Scoring based on rounds on target.
Pistol Battlefield Pickup
In the second “skills contest”, competitors fired 5 rounds from each of the below pistols to simulate a “battlefield pickup” of unfamiliar firearms:
- Walther PPX (pre-cocked striker fired DAO pistol in 9×19mm)
- SIG P250 (DAO hammer fired pistol in 9×19mm)
- Glock 37 (partially cocked striker fired DAO pistol in .45GAP)
- Ruger LCR (J-frame .357 Magnum)
- Dan Wesson Valor (SAO hammer fired pistol in .45ACP)

Rifle Battlefield Pickup
In the third “skills contest”, competitors fired a “battlefield pickup” consisting of the following rifles:
- M1 Garand (30-06)
- M1 Carbine (.30 Carbine)
- FAL (7.62×51mm)

Shotgun
The final”skills contest” consisted of a shotgun drill on the range with two VTAC boards separated by 20 yards with five steel targets arranged between them. Shooters engage the steel with the below course of fire:
- load 3 bird shot
- one round on steel from top of VTAC, one round from middle of VTAC, and one round from bottom of VTAC
- load 5 bird shot
- shoot 5 different steel targets while on the move from first VTAC board to second VTAC board
- load 3 bird shot, dump one, and replace with 00 buckshot
- one round on steel from top of VTAC, remaining two rounds from middle of VTAC
Scored based on time with 100% hits.
Hand Down Drill
Several other drills were run but the “Hand Down” drill had to be the most challenging one. This drill involves the shooter kneeling behind a VTAC board, applying a tourniquet, getting their strong-side hand wrapped (forcing them to use their weak-side hand), all while an instructor is triggering malfunctions of their rifle.
