Six hardy souls gave part of their Labor Day weekend to Revere’s Riders at the Marty Brown Memorial Open™ IN Rifle & Pistol event held in Zionsville, IN on Sept. 5th. Since all our attendees were veterans of prior Revere’s Riders event and already “squared away”, we dispensed with the usual marksmanship instruction and spent the day shooting drills and skills contests. That also allowed shortening the event from two days to just one, which was appreciated by all due to the heat.
This event is part of the Marty Brown Memorial™ series of ovarian cancer fundraising events inspired by the life of Marty Brown, an instructor for Revere’s Riders, and her 40-month battle with ovarian cancer. Marty was taken from us in 2017.
Ovarian Cancer Fundraising
Revere’s Riders hosted the first event of the Marty Brown Memorial™series in 2019 in Bedford, IN. From that initial event, we have expanded our reach into Ohio and built a fundraising total now over $100,000. Funds are used to support deserving non-profit organizations working to support women undergoing ovarian cancer treatment and medical facilities providing the treatment itself. We encourage everyone to support these organizations by attending a future Marty Brown Memorial™ event or donate directly if you’re not able to attend an event.
The Marty Brown Memorial Open™ IN Rifle & Pistol event is estimated to have raised $2,200 in additional monies to be donated to our ovarian cancer support partners. Official figures will be released at a later date. Our primary means of donating to ovarian cancer patients at this time is via pre-paid gas cards which help patients and their families defray the costs of travel to and from multiple appointments for their healthcare.

Morning: Rifle
The morning turned out surprisingly comfortable with a light breeze given the triple digit head indexes we had endured during the prior week. Lead Instructor and Line Boss Bradley Settle, Revere’s Riders president, directed attendees through a series of drills to confirm their rifles were zeroed, work on shooting from the prone, seated and standing positions, using NPOA (“natural point of aim”) during target transitions, and going through a couple of informal Revere’s Riders Rifle Qualification Tests (R3QTs).
In between all of this activity, Phil Brown ran through the usual Marty Brown Memorial™event give-aways which have each attendee reading a short paragraph describing an aspect of Marty’s life and then choosing a random envelope containing their door prize.
One of the envelopes read as below:
Surgeon is installing an infusion port into shoulder pocket of Marty’s right arm. She tells them “No, I am a rifleman, put it in the left shoulder.” While the surgeon is in the process of installing the port in her shoulder/chest pocket, Marty brags to him about making hits at 500 yards at Camp Atterbury.

“Closest to the bullseye” skills contests were also run. Winners were:
- Darrell Hammer (LWRCi AR015 piston upper)
- Bruce Rosen (SIG Sauer Kilo3K laser rangefinder certificate)
- Eric Sommer (Criterion Barrels $250 gift certificate)
- Mike Antonini (Crimson Trace CWL-300 weapon light)
Afternoon: Pistol
Everyone switched to pistols for the afternoon with Lead Instructor and Line Boss Bradley Settle again running attendees through a series of drills to ensure pistols were zeroed, transitions between targets were being made correctly, and accuracy was evaluated between slow and rapid strings of fire.
Phil Brown again gave away donated items with the obligatory reading of highlights from Marty’s life. Phil and Marty met in church and it remained an important aspect of their lives:
The LDS church played a very important role in Marty’s life. Even when she was on the verge of passing she never questioned her faith in God. She was very active in girls summer camp and the church choir.

- Bruce Rosen (Mantis X10 Elite training system)
