2025 marks the 9th time rifle marksmen and women have gathered on the long-distance rifle ranges of Camp Atterbury for the annual Marty Brown Memorial Invitational™ match. Camp Atterbury is an active National Guard base near Edinburgh in south-central Indiana which has hosted the NRA National High Power Rifle Matches in past years.
The Marty Brown Memorial Invitational™ is a 3-position rifle match shot at 100, 200, 300, and 400 yards. The primary purpose of the event is to remember Marty Brown (a rifle instructor with Revere’s Riders who passed after a long battle with ovarian cancer), fundraise in support of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and educate regarding the subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer.
Ovarian Cancer Fundraising
To date, the Marty Brown Memorial™ series of events has raised nearly $100,000 in direct support to Ovar’Coming Together in Indiana and Ovarian Cancer Connection in Ohio as well as donation of pre-paid gas cards to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Morgan’s Riflemen Challenge
New for 2025, Kevin Fitz-Gerald conducted a Morgan’s Riflemen challenge as the first “cold bore” shot of each day. A “shingle” target (measuring only 2.75″ by 4.25″) was placed on the target backer and shooters attempted to place one shot on target from 100 yards unsupported from the standing position (sling only). Only three shooters were able to successfully complete the challenge:
- Darrell Hammer
- Frank Melloni
- Becki Gibson

Kevin Fitz-Gerald presented Darrell, Frank, and Becki with special Morgan’s Riflemen patches which he carried with him as he retraced the “Beeline March“. This march was undertaken by Daniel Morgan and his 96 men beginning in Mecklenburg, Virginia (now Shepherdstown, West Virginia) to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kevin rucked with the patches in his backpack at several stops along the way.
The “Beeline March” was a response to the events of April 19, 1775 (the Battles of Lexington and Concord) and the resulting call for men to come to the aid of their country. Morgan and his men began the roughly 600 mile journey on July 17, 1775 and reached Cambridge on August 11, 1775 (26 days later at a phenomenal average of more than 20 miles per day) to offer their services to General George Washington of the Continental Army. Morgan’s men, along with another contingent from Virginia, constituted the XIth Virginia Regiment and were famous for their rifles (as opposed to the smooth-bore muskets used by most other colonists and the British) and their marksmanship.
Skills Contests
Along with the official rifle match, the Marty Brown Memorial Invitational™ also includes several “Skills Contests” which award prizes donated by the generous companies supporting the event. Participants buy into each “Skills Contest”, which is separate from the official match, and the proceeds contribute to the overall fundraising. The Saturday “Skills Contest” winners were:

Match Winner
The official match winner is presented with the custom-made “High Score” trophy. This year we were fortunate to have four previous winners of the Marty Brown Memorial Invitational™ competing: Matt Anderson (2022), Darrell Hammer (2019 and 2021), John Hopkins (2017), and Jim Rose (2023). More than one competitor put up a perfect score of 40 but Frank Melloni was declared the winner based on his 17 hits in the “V” ring. Frank’s score of 40-17V is also the new all-time best score shot at the Marty Brown Memorial Invitational™.

“High Score” winner: Frank Melloni 40-17V (new all-time record score)
Frank used a not-yet-announced prototype sunshade on his optic to assist in visualizing the targets during the match:

OK, so that’s just a piece of paper held on by masking tape but it was “field expedient” and effective…
